steps widget not updating on iPhone
Usually the widget isn't broken — it's waiting for its turn. iOS decides when widgets refresh, and Apple says a widget you look at often typically gets 40 to 70 refreshes a day, roughly one every 15 to 60 minutes, with fewer for widgets you rarely see. Opening the app and going back to the Home Screen usually hands the widget the new number at once. A widget that has disappeared, or one stuck on zero, is a different problem with a different fix.
The widget is there, but the number is old
This is the common one, and it isn't a fault. A widget doesn't run all the time; the system wakes it from a daily budget, and Apple lists what that budget depends on — how often and when the widget is visible to you, when it last reloaded, and whether its app is active. Apple also says plainly that the intervals vary.
What helps: open the app, then go back. Apple's documentation says reloads an app asks for while it is in the foreground don't count against the widget's budget, so that is the moment the widget can catch up. Removing and re-adding the widget also works, but it isn't usually needed.
The widget disappeared
Widgets don't delete themselves, but they do get buried. If the widget was in a stack, swipe up or down on the stack — it may simply not be on top. If it is really gone, add it again: touch and hold an empty spot on the Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and pick the app. If the app isn't in that list, open it once and look again. The full walk-through, with a short video, is on how to add a steps widget.
The widget shows 0
Then the widget is fine and the count isn't reaching it. Zero almost always means one of two settings: Fitness Tracking is off (Settings → Privacy & Security → Motion & Fitness), or the app isn't allowed to read steps in Health. Both are on step counter not working on iPhone.
On the lock screen
Lock Screen widgets are woken by the system too, so an old number there has the same fix: open the app. Setting one up takes under a minute — see how to show steps on the lock screen.
How Angel Step's widget behaves
We make Angel Step, so take this as ours. Its widget reads your step count from Apple Health itself, so it shows the same number as Health. When you leave the app with a new count, it asks iOS to reload the widget, and the widget also asks to be woken again about every 15 minutes — which iOS may stretch, as above. It never asks more often than that, because a widget that spends its budget early has nothing left for the evening.
Questions
Why is my steps widget not updating on iPhone?
Usually because iOS hasn't woken it yet. The system decides when widgets refresh: Apple says a widget you look at often typically gets 40 to 70 refreshes a day, roughly one every 15 to 60 minutes, and the interval varies. Reloads an app asks for while it is open don't count against that budget, so opening the step counter app usually hands the widget the new number.
Why did my widget disappear from the Home Screen?
Check whether it is inside a stack: swipe up or down on the stack to see the widgets underneath. If it is gone, add it again: touch and hold an empty spot on the Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and pick the app. If the app is not in the list, open it once and look again.
Why does my steps widget show 0?
That is rarely the widget. A count of zero usually means the step count itself isn't reaching the app: Fitness Tracking is off in Settings, or the app isn't allowed to read steps in Health.
Does the lock screen widget update the same way?
Lock Screen widgets are also woken by the system rather than running all the time, so an older number there has the same fix: open the app.
