When can you see the Milky Way?

The bright core of the Milky Way, toward the center of our galaxy in Sagittarius, is a summer sight in the US. At 35° north, the core of the Milky Way first clears 10° in a dark, moonless sky before dawn in February 2027 (44 min on the night of February 16–17), stays up longest in June (5 h 34 min on June 5–6) and is last seen in the evening in October 2027; from November to January it is not up in a dark sky at all. Below: the best night of each month, five US parks in July, and a calculator for your place and date.

Is the Milky Way up tonight?

Enter your latitude and longitude (west is negative), the time zone your clock is on that night, and the date of the evening. The answer is how long the center of the galaxy stands at least 10° above the horizon while the sky is fully dark (the Sun more than 18° below the horizon) and the Moon is down.

The date starts at tonight; without JavaScript, the example above is Joshua Tree on the night of July 1–2, 2027. This page knows the Sun, the Moon and the stars; it does not know clouds, haze or city lights.

Best night of each month (35° north)

In October 2026 the core is an early-evening sight: on the best night, October 1–2, it was up for 1 h 20 min after dark (8:08 p.m.–9:28 p.m.). In July 2027 the best night is July 1–2: at 35° north the core is up for 5 h 27 min, from 10:04 p.m. to 3:31 a.m., moving from south-southeast to the southwest. Each row is the month's best night at 35° north, by local clock time near the middle of a time zone, with daylight saving time from March to early November; a dash means the core is not up in a dark sky on any night of that month.

On the same night it is up for 6 h 19 min at Big Bend in Texas, 5 h 35 min at Joshua Tree and 4 h 2 min at Cherry Springs in Pennsylvania: the farther south, the longer it stays up. Times are each park's local clock time.

Why 10° and a moonless sky

Near the horizon, starlight passes through much more air and fades: at 10° up a star loses about a magnitude of brightness, against a fifth of one overhead. Moonlight and twilight wash out the faint band the same way, so this page counts only the hours when the Sun is more than 18° below the horizon and the Moon has set.

Where Angel Step fits

Angel Step reads only your step count from Apple Health and shows it as one number on a living sky. It does not watch the galaxy; that is this page's job. A dark, moonless night is a good time for a slow walk away from the lights.
