### The eight names

The US Naval Observatory names eight phases: New Moon, Waxing Crescent, First Quarter, Waxing Gibbous, Full Moon, Waning Gibbous, Last Quarter and Waning Crescent. The four main ones are moments; here a date gets that name when the moment falls on it in your time zone, and the days in between take the name of the stretch they are in. The Observatory's own daily label follows how much is lit at noon, so on the day before a full moon it can already say Full Moon.

### Where Angel Step fits

Angel Step reads only your step count from Apple Health and shows it as one number on a living sky. It does not track the Moon; that is this page's job. A bright Moon makes an evening walk easier to see.
