how far is that many steps?

10,000 steps is about 4.4 miles (7.0 km) if you are 5′7″ (170 cm) — roughly an hour and forty minutes at an everyday pace; about 6.4 km at 155 cm and 7.6 km at 185 cm. Shorter counts scale the same way: for someone 170 cm tall, 1111 steps is about 0.78 km (0.48 mi) — roughly eleven minutes of walking. 3333 steps is 2.3 km, about half an hour. 7777 is 5.5 km and 11111 is 7.8 km, which is most of a morning. Your own step is shorter or longer, so the calculator below asks for your height.

### Every goal at a glance

Worked out for a height of 170 cm (5′7″), which gives a step of about 70 cm. The three paces are a stroll, an everyday walk, and a brisk one.

Distance and walking time by step goal, for a height of 170 cm

| steps | distance | in miles | stroll · 80/min | everyday · 100/min | brisk · 130/min |

### How far is 10,000 steps?

About 7.0 km, or 4.4 miles, for a height of 170 cm — and an hour and forty minutes at an everyday pace. The round numbers people count in, worked out the same way as everything else on this page. Height moves it: the same 10,000 steps cover about 6.4 km at 155 cm and 7.6 km at 185 cm.

Distance and walking time for common step counts, at a height of 170 cm

| steps | distance | in miles | stroll · 80/min | everyday · 100/min | brisk · 130/min |
| 1,000 | 0.70 km | 0.44 mi | 13 min | 10 min | 8 min |
| 2,000 | 1.4 km | 0.87 mi | 25 min | 20 min | 15 min |
| 5,000 | 3.5 km | 2.2 mi | 1 h 3 min | 50 min | 38 min |
| 10,000 | 7.0 km | 4.4 mi | 2 h 5 min | 1 h 40 min | 1 h 17 min |
| 15,000 | 10.5 km | 6.5 mi | 3 h 8 min | 2 h 30 min | 1 h 55 min |
| 20,000 | 14.0 km | 8.7 mi | 4 h 10 min | 3 h 20 min | 2 h 34 min |

10,000 is not a medical figure — it came from a 1960s pedometer name, and no study set it. It is on this page because it is the number people count in, not because it is the number to aim for.

### How many steps is 30 minutes of walking?

The other direction: you know how long you walked, not how many steps it took. Steps are counted by cadence — how many you take a minute — so the answer is the pace times the minutes, and it does not depend on your height at all. Thirty minutes at an everyday pace is about 3,000 steps; an hour is about 6,000.

Steps taken in a walk of a given length, by pace

| walking time | stroll · 80/min | everyday · 100/min | brisk · 130/min |
| 10 min | 800 | 1,000 | 1,300 |
| 15 min | 1,200 | 1,500 | 1,950 |
| 20 min | 1,600 | 2,000 | 2,600 |
| 30 min | 2,400 | 3,000 | 3,900 |
| 45 min | 3,600 | 4,500 | 5,850 |
| 60 min | 4,800 | 6,000 | 7,800 |
| 90 min | 7,200 | 9,000 | 11,700 |

Rounded to the nearest ten, because nobody holds one cadence for an hour. Distance does depend on height — that is the table further down — but the step count does not.

### How many steps are in a kilometer — or a mile

The same arithmetic, read the other way. A shorter person takes more steps to cover the same ground, which is why a single "steps per mile" figure is always a little wrong for almost everyone. How many steps are in a mile takes that question on its own, with the identity that needs no body model at all.

Step length and steps per distance, by height

| height | step | steps · per km | steps · per mile |
| 150 cm · 4′11″ | 62 cm | 1,614 | 2,598 |
| 155 cm · 5′1″ | 64 cm | 1,562 | 2,514 |
| 160 cm · 5′3″ | 66 cm | 1,513 | 2,435 |
| 165 cm · 5′5″ | 68 cm | 1,467 | 2,362 |
| 170 cm · 5′7″ | 70 cm | 1,424 | 2,292 |
| 175 cm · 5′9″ | 72 cm | 1,384 | 2,227 |
| 180 cm · 5′11″ | 74 cm | 1,345 | 2,165 |
| 185 cm · 6′1″ | 76 cm | 1,309 | 2,106 |
| 190 cm · 6′3″ | 78 cm | 1,274 | 2,051 |

### How this is worked out

Distance is steps × step length. Step length is estimated from height: height × 0.413. At 170 cm that's a step of about 70 cm. It is an approximation rather than a measurement of your step, and the convention's split by sex — 0.413 for women, 0.415 for men — is under half a percent, while height moves the answer by a quarter.

A step is one foot to the other. A stride is two steps, the full cycle. Plenty of pages online use one word for the other and still count single steps — but a full stride entered where a calculator expects one step makes every distance come out twice as long.

Time is steps ÷ cadence, and cadence doesn't depend on your height — step length cancels out. The figures used here: 100 steps per minute is the threshold of moderate intensity (3 METs) and 130 the threshold of vigorous (6 METs), from the CADENCE-Adults studies. The 100 held in all three age groups they tested — 21–40, 41–60 and 61–85; the 130 held in the first two, and in the oldest group too few people reached vigorous intensity to set one. An 80-per-minute stroll sits below the moderate threshold, and it is called a stroll here for that reason.

These are estimates, honestly. Your real step changes with your pace, your shoes, the hill you're on, and how tired you are — individual variation of 10–15% is normal. Angel Step's own distance line is a simpler estimate still: your steps times one average step.

### Why goals like 3333, 7777, 11111

Angel Step offers twelve goals of this kind, from 3333 to 22222 (5555 to start with), and they're offered because they're easy to hold in your head and pleasant to walk toward — not because 10,000 was ever anything more than a Japanese pedometer's marketing from 1965. A goal you remember is a goal you keep.

We don't tell you what a number means. Angel Step is not a numerology app: no readings, no interpretations, no messages. Pick the size of day you want — 3333 for a real walk, 11111 when you have a morning — and the number is just a number you're walking toward. More about the app is on the about page.

### Where a number like this lives

Picking a number is the easy half; seeing it every day is the other one. That's what Angel Step is for — the goal you chose sits on your home screen as one number on a sky, and the count comes from Apple Health, so it agrees with what your iPhone already knows. It's a step counter and nothing else: no workouts, no charts to analyze, no notifications telling you off for a quiet day.

It's on the App Store since 29 September 2026, free, for iPhone. What it is and what it isn't is the honest version.

- Step length from height (× 0.413) — an approximation, not a measurement of your step: the same convention splits 0.413 for women and 0.415 for men, and that gap is under half a percent while height moves the answer by a quarter.
- Cadence thresholds of 100 and 130 steps per minute for moderate and vigorous intensity in 21–40 year-olds — Tudor-Locke et al., CADENCE-adults; the same two figures in 41–60 year-olds — 2020 paper; in 61–85 year-olds 100 held for moderate intensity, and too few people reached vigorous intensity to set a threshold — 2021 paper.
- Distance in the app itself is a simpler estimate: your steps times one average step length, because the app doesn't ask your height. If Apple Health already shares its measured walking + running distance with the app, that is shown instead. What that means for your data is on the privacy page.
